10 reasons to learn Latin

VERITAS NUNQUAM PERIT (Seneca)

At La Petite Ecole Bilingue - Stewart Bilingual School, we offer introductory weekly 30 min Latin classes from year 3.

We use The Minimus Cambridge textbooks.

Minimus is a unique Latin course for younger children. It's based on a real family who lived at Vindolanda in 100AD: Flavius, the fort commander, his wife Lepidina, their three children, assorted household slaves, their cat Vibrissa - and Minimus the mouse!

Many might wonder why in a time of new technologies, globalization and shifting of main business centres to Asia and Middle East, our school chose Latin as third language for its children.

First of all, Latin is the maths of the humanities. The introduction of Latin in our curriculum provides tools to our pupils to build bridges between the multiple languages they already master, or help them in the acquisition of new languages.

Here are top 10 reasons to learn Latin:

#1: Latin is the next step after phonics.

#2: Half of our English and French vocabulary is made up of Latin words and roots.

#3 Latin provides the root words for all of the modern sciences.

#4 Latin is the language of law, government, logic, and theology.

#5 Latin is the most efficient way to learn Engli

sh grammar.

#6 Latin is the best preparation for learning any language.

#8 Latin aids the mind in other ways …

#9 Latin is transformative.

#10 Latin is the language of Western Civilization.

Marcel Pagnol, one of the greatest French novelist, playwright, and filmmaker of the 20th Century was already perceiving this urge for conservation of Latin and Ancient Greek in school programmes. He was himself an English teacher prior to his fame and his advocacy for Latin still resonates as a the voice for excellency in education and forces us to raise our standards.

Apart from Latin, we also offer workshops in Arabic as well as coding sessions (another language!). No doubt that this double window we offer to Modern and Ancient worlds plays to the great benefit of our pupils.
